HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Astros entered last season looking to defend the title after winning their first World Series in 2017.Being eliminated in the ALCS by the Boston Red Sox has done nothing to shake their confidence as the 2019 season arrives.“I don’t think the feeling’s any different Houston Astros Jersey ,” manager AJ Hinch said. “I think the way people talk about things is a little different … there’s an expectation of winning here and there should be. We have a good team.”The Astros won their second AL West crown last year after setting a franchise record with 103 wins. They swept the Cleveland Indians in the ALDS before injuries to stars Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa contributed to a 4-1 series loss to the Red Sox in the next round.Although the expectations remain high for a team that returns the majority of its roster from last season, Hinch will be careful to make sure these Astros don’t look too far ahead.“I’m going to be the guy behind the scenes who is keeping our feet on the ground and making sure that we win series, we win homestands, we win months,” Hinch said. “It’s a boring, methodical way of describing it but that’s what’s needed for 162 (games) and that’s why we’ve had four winning seasons.”Altuve and Correa are healthy now and up-and-coming star third baseman Alex Bregman is poised to take another step after a breakout 2018 season. The rotation is in good shape, too, with Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole back to lead the pitching staff.“I have as much confidence as I ever have in this team,” Hinch said. “I love this team. I love the makeup. I love the edge that we have, the versatility that we have scam:  authentic-justin-verlander-jersey , the depth that our minor league system has. There’s a lot of good going on here.”The Astros open the season at Tampa Bay on March 28 with Verlander on the mound against 2018 Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell.WHO’S THE DH?The Astros didn’t re-sign Evan Gattis, who served as the team’s designated hitter last season, leaving that spot open entering this year. But don’t expect the team to fill the role with just one player. General manager Jeff Luhnow said Tyler White will get some at-bats but the team plans to use the DH spot to give their stars a break from playing in the field from time to time. He noted that Altuve, Correa, Bregman, first baseman Yuli Gurriel and center fielder George Springer could all see time at designated hitter this season.“It’s nice to have that flexibility and not be locked into having one guy that you have to play every day because he’s the DH,” Luhnow said. “We certainly want to utilize that spot and maximize both the rest it provides for the position players as well as the output because we want to get some home runs out of that spot.”NEW FACESWhile much of Houston’s team is unchanged from a year ago, the Astros did add a few new players this offseason. Their top acquisition came with the signing of Michael Brantley to a two-year, $32 million deal. The 31-year-old gives the Astros an upgrade in left field and adds a left-handed bat to a predominantly right-handed lineup. The career .295 hitter had spent his entire 10-year career with the Indians. After letting left-hander Dallas Keuchel go in free agency, the Astros filled his role in the rotation by adding fellow lefty Wade Miley on a one-year Hector Rondon Jersey , $4.5 million contract. Miley was 5-2 with a 2.57 ERA in 16 starts and 80 2/3 innings for the Milwaukee Brewers last year.Houston also signed a new catcher in Robinson Chirinos after Brian McCann signed with the Braves. Chirinos spent the last six seasons with the Rangers, where he hit .222 with 18 homers and 65 RBIs.They also traded for utility player Aledmys Diaz after longtime super-utility man Marwin Gonzalez signed with the Twins. Diaz, who was an All-Star in 2016, batted .263 with 18 home runs and 55 RBIs for the Blue Jays last season.ROOKIES TO WATCHThis team won’t have many rookies on its opening day roster, but a pair of young pitchers will be important in the bullpen. Josh James and Framber Valdez both made their MLB debuts late last season, but will still be considered rookies this season because of their limited work last year. Valdez competed for the fifth spot in the rotation this spring, but was beat out by veteran Brad Peacock. The left-handed Valdez was 4-1 with a 2.19 ERA in eight games with five starts last season. James performed so well after a September call-up that he made Houston’s playoff roster. The 25-year-old, whose fastball routinely hits 102 mph, missed out on a chance to compete for a spot in the rotation because of a quadriceps injury this spring. But he’s healthy now and should contribute out of the bullpen early, but could start at some point this season. But … der-jersey , he’s healthy and beginning an every-five-days schedule."WhiteFanposts Fanshots Sections Brewers Rumors and SpeculationConversation StartersWPA Game RecapsTransactionsLatest NewsMilwaukee Brewers NewsJimmy Nelson will not be on Opening Day roster for Milwaukee BrewersNew,40commentsBut, he’s healthy and beginning an every-five-days schedule.CDTShareTweetShareShareJimmy Nelson will not be on Opening Day roster for Milwaukee BrewersOrlando Ramirez-USA TODAY SportsJimmy Nelson won’t be ready to begin the regular season on the active roster for the Milwaukee Brewers. That shouldn’t really come as a surprise to anyone who pays attention to the team, but Craig Counsell felt compelled to make that official announcement earlier this evening. Nelson made his first appearance in a game setting in 549 days on Monday, tossing an inning against the White Sox while allowing two earned runs. He missed the entire 2018 season while rehabbing from an intensive shoulder surgery that required repairs to his labrum, capsule, and rotator cuff. With only 16 days remaining until Opening Day, it would be a lot to ask of any starting pitcher to get fully stretched out in that short time, let alone one who is trying to come back from what Jimmy has endured. But while Nelson won’t be ready to break camp when the team heads to the Cream City, he does appear to be on track to returning to the team at some point in the first half of the season. His fastball velocity sat in the 91-92 MPH range while reaching as high as 94 in his initial outing and all three of the outs he recorded were via strikeouts - two on curveballs and one on a slider. Counsell indicated that Nelson will be placed on an every-five-days pitching schedule Jimmy Wynn Jersey , with his next Cactus League appearance scheduled to take place on Saturday. The plan is for him to go three innings in one of the team’s split squad contests. On an every-fifth-day plan, Nelson would make one more Cactus League appearance on the 22nd against the Reds. It stands to reason that he would then begin the regular season on the Injured List, likely in extended Spring Training to continue building up his pitch count. Once he’s fully stretched out, it would make sense for the team to send him out on a rehab assignment, which can last up to 30 days, to make some minor league starts and work his way up the ladder. If all goes well, that timeline could set Nelson up for a return sometime in the middle of May. All of that is my own personal speculation, though.

CHICAGO (AP) — Ryan Cordell took a deep breath at the plate after reading the sign from Chicago White Sox third base coach Nick Capra. Then he locked in and executed perfectly.Yolmer Sanchez raced home from third base with the tiebreaking run on Cordell’s suicide squeeze in the eighth inning, and the White Sox topped the Toronto Blue Jays 4-2 Thursday night for their fourth win in five games.Article continues below ...With runners at the corners and the infield in, Cordell bunted to the first base side. Toronto reliever Derek Law (0-1) threw to catcher Danny Jansen, but Sanchez slid under the tag to give Cordell his second RBI of the game and Chicago a 3-2 lead. After twice getting signs for a safety squeeze and taking a ball when he could swing away, Cordell said Law’s low pitch was just what he was looking for.“I’ve had a couple of them now, safeties, not the suicide squeeze, so it was a little different,” Cordell said. “Fortunately I got a decent pitch to put the bat on the ball.“When I got to first base and looked in and see the dugout going nuts, that’s a real exciting thing.”Charlie Tilson then scored on Leury Garcia’s sacrifice fly. Tilson was originally ruled out on Billy McKinney’s throw Leonys Martin Jersey , but the call was overturned following a replay review.Kelvin Herrera (1-2) pitched around two walks in a scoreless eighth to get the win. Alex Colomé tossed a perfect ninth for his ninth save in nine chances, completing a two-hitter.Welington Castillo also drove in a run for Chicago.Freddy Galvis hit a solo shot for his sixth homer and first in more than a month, but the Blue Jays lost for the fourth time in five games as their offense continued to sputter. Toronto entered with a major league-worst .216 batting average.“It’s been a struggle for our offense. Can’t explain it,” manager Charlie Montoyo said. “But the positive side is that (Marcus) Stroman gave us a chance. He was outstanding.”Stroman permitted two runs (one earned) and seven hits through six innings, striking out six. He hasn’t won since April 19 and was hit hard in his previous three outings, giving up 12 earned runs over 14 1/3 innings.White Sox starter Dylan Covey allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits and a pair of walks in 5 2/3 innings in his best outing this season. After giving up Galvis’ homer and Brandon Drury’s single to start the second, the right-hander retired 12 straight until Eric Sogard walked leading off the sixth — and came around to tie it at 2 with an unearned run.Covey entered with a 5.91 ERA and was roughed up for four runs in 4 2/3 innings at Toronto last Friday when he walked five.“For me today it was just to attack the zone and not let walks beat me, “Covey said. “Just throw strikes, pound the (strike) zone and let the defense play.”The White Sox jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on Castillo’s RBI single with two outs. Galvis led off the second with his drive to right-center.Chicago went back ahead 2-1 in the fourth when Nicky Delmonico scored from third on Cordell’s infield singleToronto pushed across a run without a hit in the sixth to tie it at 2 and chase Covey.Sogard scored from third with two outs when third baseman Yoan Moncada fielded Randal Grichuk’s sharp grounder, but threw wide to first for an error. Evan Marshall entered and got Galvis to ground out.BLUE JAYS MOVESToronto recalled INF Richard Ureña and optioned struggling OF Teoscar Hernández to Triple-A Buffalo. In 39 games with the Blue Jays, Hernández hit .189 with three homers and 15 RBIs. Since May 1, he was batting just .114 (4 for 35).Ureña started the season with the Blue Jays and entered Thursday hitting .313 in 11 games during two stints with Toronto this year.ROCK AND ROLLMcKinney smacked hard into the left field fence catching Sanchez’s drive in the fourth, then somersaulted forward, landed on his feet and threw back to the infield in one motion.TRAINER’S ROOMBlue Jays: Clayton Richard (right knee stress fracture)  authentic-joe-jimenez-jersey , one of four Toronto starters on the injured list, threw a bullpen. Before the game, Montoyo said Richard might make his Blue Jays debut in Chicago on Saturday, but afterward announced the left-hander would first make a rehab start in the minors. Montoyo didn’t yet know where. Toronto acquired the 35-year-old lefty and cash from the Padres for OF Connor Panas last December.White Sox: SS Tim Anderson was held out of the starting lineup for rest, but was available off the bench. … LHP Manny Bañuelos, who left Tuesday’s loss to Cleveland in the fifth inning with a left shoulder strain, had a “clean” MRI according to manager Rick Renteria and is day-to-day. There is a chance Bañuelos won’t miss his next turn in the rotation.UP NEXTToronto RHP Aaron Sanchez (3-4, 3.75 ERA) faces Chicago RHP Ivan Nova (2-3, 6.29) on Friday. Sanchez has lost three straight, with a 6.35 ERA during that stretch. Nova has won his last two starts, yielding only two runs in 13 innings.

Friday night’s game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium should be sponsored by the letter K scam: , because there figures to be more than a few strikeouts. If young right-handers Walker Buehler of the Dodgers and Jack Flaherty of the Cardinals pitch on Friday as they did Aug. 22 when they faced each other at Chavez Ravine, runs and solid contact might be at a premium in a game dripping with pennant-race pressure.Buehler (6-5, 3.09 ERA) fired seven shutout innings in that game against the Cardinals last month, permitting just three hits and two walks while whiffing nine. Flaherty (8-6, 2.92) owned a no-hitter until Joc Pederson cracked a solo homer with one out in the bottom of the sixth. It was the only hit Flaherty, who walked two and fanned 10, allowed in six innings.Article continues below ...Los Angeles’ bullpen gave it up in the last two innings that night. Tyler O’Neill clouted a pinch-homer off Scott Alexander in the eighth and Paul DeJong drilled a tie-breaking two-run shot off Kenley Jansen in the ninth to give St. Louis a 3-1 win that polished off a series sweep. The Cardinals (81-66) lead the Dodgers (80-67) by one game in the race for the National League’s second wild-card spot, thanks to Los Angeles’ 9-7 win Thursday night. The Dodgers led wire-to-wire, including 8-1 at one point, yet couldn’t really exhale until Matt Adams grounded out to first as the potential tying run to end the game.Manny Machado starred for Los Angeles with three hits, including a double and his 34th homer of the year in the seventh inning.“I just tried to go up there and be myself Gregor Blanco Jersey , have quality at-bats,” Machado said to Sportsnet LA. “Every out, every pitch from now on counts. One play can turn things around, so we have to be on top of it. We did everything we needed to do today.”The Dodgers, who at times have experienced terrible difficulties hitting with runners in scoring position over the last month, set the game’s tone with a great at-bat in that situation in the first inning. David Freese taxed rookie left-hander Austin Gomber for 14 pitches, fouling off nine of them, before lacing a two-run triple down the left-field line.Freese, who gets cheered during every at-bat in St. Louis because he was the 2011 World Series Most Valuable Player for the Cardinals, was acquired just before the Aug. 31 waiver deadline from Pittsburgh.“It’s always great coming back here and seeing the fans,” Freese said. “I’m excited to be a part of this. I’m on the back end of my career scam /authentic-evan-longoria-jersey , sitting at 35 years old.”One of Freese’s former Cardinals teammates made his way back into the lineup Thursday night for this big series. All-Star catcher Yadier Molina (hamstring) missed six games, and probably isn’t 100 percent, but St. Louis wanted him back in there. The Cardinals plan for him to catch every game in the series except for Saturday, which is a 12:05 p.m. start after the Friday night game.“He’s very confident he can regulate himself in what he’s doing so not to have a setback, which we clearly don’t need,” St. Louis manager Mike Shildt said of Molina. ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Tommy La Stella is providing an unexpected power boost for the Los Angeles Angels during their interleague series against the Milwaukee Brewers. The second baseman homered twice and drove in four runs to lead the Angels to an 11-8 victory Tuesday night after Mike Trout exited with a groin injury.La Stella, who had only one other multihomer game, has gone deep in consecutive games for the first time in his career. It’s just the second time in La Stella’s six major league seasons that he’s had three or more homers in a year.“It feels nice. It reminds me of Little League a little bit. It’s a good feeling any time you get into a ball like that,” he said.Andrelton Simmons had three hits as Los Angeles extended its win streak to five games. Jonathan Lucroy added two hits and three RBIs against his first major league team.Trout left in the fourth inning after he strained his right groin while running to second base in the second. The Angels said their $426.5 million center fielder is day-to-day.La Stella’s three-run homer off Freddy Peralta in the first inning gave the Angels a 6-0 lead. The Brewers drew within a run in the fourth before La Stella led off the bottom half with a drive to center. The 412-foot shot was the longest of his career.“I caught them right and on the barrel pretty well,” La Stella said. “I’ve been freeing up my hands at the plate and not muscling the swing. That allows the power to generate itself.”Angels manager Brad Ausmus said La Stella got off to a slow start but has turned the corner in this series.“I don’t know if I would have pegged him for the second-most home runs at this point in the season but I’m glad he had two tonight because they were important Duane Kuiper Jersey ,” Ausmus said.Los Angeles went ahead to stay when Alex Wilson walked Lucroy with the bases loaded in the seventh. Simmons doubled home a run in the eighth, and Albert Pujols tacked on a sacrifice fly.Cam Bedrosian (1-0) pitched a scoreless inning for the win and Cody Allen got three outs for his third save. Alex Claudio (0-1), who walked Lucroy to start the seventh, took the loss.Yasmani Grandal homered twice and drove in three runs for Milwaukee. Lorenzo Cain and Ben Gamel each had two hits, and Mike Moustakas went deep for the second straight night.Moustakas and Grandal hit consecutive homers in the fifth to give the Brewers an 8-7 lead.“We made a great comeback and gave ourselves a chance for a couple innings. A couple leadoff walks hurt us tonight,” manager Craig Counsell said. “They did a good job of putting some pressure on us.”Peralta, who threw eight shutout innings and struck out a career-high 11 in his last start, had one of the poorest outings of his career. The right-hander allowed a career-high eight hits and tied a career worst by giving up seven runs in 3 1/3 innings.Matt Harvey struggled in his second consecutive home outing. The right-hander allowed six runs in 4 1/3 innings. He has a 15.13 ERA at Angels Stadium.UMPIRE ADJUSTMENTPlate umpire Tom Hallion took a foul ball hit by Simmons off the mask in the second and was looked at by an Angels trainer. Hallion remained behind the plate but left between innings. Second base umpire Todd Tichenor went behind the plate to finish the game. The Angels said Hallion was still experiencing headaches and will be evaluated before Wednesday’s game.TRAINER’S ROOMBrewers: RHP Jimmy Nelson (right shoulder) threw two innings during an extended spring training game. Counsell said Nelson is likely to throw again in a couple of days before a determination is made on his next step.Angels: LHP Andrew Heaney threw for the first time since experiencing soreness in his left elbow at the end of spring training. Heaney received a cortisone shot last week and is unlikely to rejoin the rotation until next month.UP NEXTFelix Pena (0-1, 5.40 ERA) will make his second start at home as the Angels finish a seven-game homestand. The right-hander struck out seven and allowed one earned run in 4 2/3 innings Friday against Texas. The Brewers will send Brandon Woodruff (1-0, 6.00) to the mound for his first start against the Angels.
